I particularly liked the graffiti residue left on the table from writing on the prayer flags.

Fashioned by Brooke, the Peg Mandala activity area is made complete with a round table and donut cushions.

Facilitating seven children's art activities over the duration of the exhibition, and wrapping it up with the Peg Doll Making Workshop on ArtPlay Sunday.

Domestic Duties Chapter Three - Official Opening

Please accept this warm invitation to the official opening of my next solo exhibition, Domestic Duties Chapter Three 'Sacred in the Domestic' to be held at Noosa Regional Gallery on Friday 1 December 2017 from 6pm. Guest Speaker Dr Ginna Brock.

Domestic Duties Chapter Three is the finale in the trilogy of explorations into the domestic sphere. 

Sacred in the Domestic (detail), 2017, vintage laundry trolley, wire basket, plastic, upcycled pillow-cases, ink, 22 carat gold leaf and varnish.

One of the features of Domestic Duties Chapter One (2011) and Domestic Duties Chapter Two (2012) was audience participation. The audience informed the development of the works in both exhibitions by responding to the term ‘Domestic Duties’. Domestic Duties Chapter Three continues the conversation and documents the response to the phrase ‘Sacred in the Domestic’ by transferring them onto the prayer flag like fabric so that it reads as a stream of consciousness poem – a snapshot of our community in the here and now.

Domestic Duties Chapter Three - Seeking your thoughts!

Being part of You, Me and a Cup of Tea was a wonderful experience, but time waits around for no man and time is ticking on my next big gig's deadline, Domestic Duties Chapter Three 'Sacred in the Domestic' a major solo exhibition at Gallery One, Noosa Regional Gallery (dates below).

Some may remember participating in the previous two chapters, Domestic Duties Chapter One (2011) and Domestic Duties Chapter Two (2012) and I thank you for the overwhelming responses. The initial concept for the Domestic Duties Project was to create an installation using an iconic Hills Hoist Clothesline as the center piece for the exhibition, well space didn't allow for the first two chapters, and in hindsight, time was needed for the concept to ripen and mature to its full potential - Chapter Three see's the inclusion of personal interpretation into mandala, pray flag and rainbow colour symbolism.

Domestic Duties Chapter Three is the finale in a trilogy of explorations into domestic duties. Chapter three also invites audience participation by responding in ONE word to the phrase
"Sacred in the Domestic" - some of the ONE word responses I've received thus far include; thankfulness, grace, calm, appreciative, bliss and the list goes on...

Best Sculpture Award

Over the weekend my art piece Domestic Goddess took out the Best Sculpture Award at the Immanuel Arts Festival.  In its 32nd year running, the Immanuel Arts Festival is recognised as the largest community arts event on the Sunshine Coast which attracts over 300 artists and showcases over 1000 artworks across a number of different genres including painting, photography, sculpture, creative and wearable art. Its nice to participate and support the local art events, and I am humbled to have received an award.

Domestic Goddess is of course from my Domestic Duties Chp.2 solo exhibition 2012, in which part of, is now touring in a group show entitled Teasing the Domestic with Artslink Queensland 2013-14 Touring Exhibiton Program.  Tour dates are on my website if anyone is interested > here.  However the exhibition Teasing the Domestic is soon to be exhibiting locally for a few days (15 - 22 June, 2013), at The J (Noosaville) in conjunction with the 'Noosa Long Weekend'.  I will post sooner to the day with all the details to confirm the dates, times and opening etc...

Here are the dates; Sat.15th to Sat.22nd June, 2013.  "Teasing the Domestic" take a walk on the woolly side....  is proudly presented by Artslink Queensland as part of the Noosa Long Weekend, and as mentioned in my previous post will be showcased at 'The J'.  Viewing times are from 10am to 4pm over the ten days and admission is free.

In focus:
Teasing the Domestic proposes a toast to both the hand-made and the home-made. The exhibition features Sunshine Coast artists Kim Schoenberger and Corrie Wright as well as Kelly-Marie McEwan from Toowoomba. The selection of marvellous entries from the 2010 and 2012 World Tea Cosy Competition, come from urban and rural Queensland, interstate and overseas.

This gala display celebrates many things: the continuing transmission of heritage textile skills across generations of women; the sheer indulgence of padded pink decoration; the evolvement and subversion of traditional forms and the simple joy of crazy crafted critters.

Teasing the Domestic is a group exhibition touring in the 2013-14 Touring Exhibition Program for Artslink Qld.

crating artworks for tour

The last couple of weeks its all been about getting my art works together for Artslink Queensland 2013-14 Touring Exhibition Teasing The Domestic. (details in a previous post ) Special crating care is specified for art works to tour - museum quality crating, as the works will travel for two possibly three years so the art work really needs to be packed into strong firm boxes.  We were recommended  to use Rebul, I can highly recommend them too, if your ever in need of quality crating. Packaging can seem a little tedious at times but using this new crating system, I found it quiet an interesting process so much so I documented it to share it with you!

They come as flat pack.

 

Assembling was a breeze, each section slot into each other with pvc pipe, run along the hard cardboard tubular tracks, I also chose the option of internal foam lining.  The outer shell is covered with a thin sheet of MDF board with carry handles.

 

I considered several options for securing the artworks inside the crate, as it goes I had a chunk of foam left over from packaging another artwork and if fit snug as a bug, how awesome was that!!  I also bought another slab of foam to go on top, it ended up being the right internal height, even without prior measuring - the gods were on my side this time :-)

 

I opted to carve into the foam so the art works fit snug into the hole, first by outlining each art work and carving into the foam using an electric carving knife (images below), I learnt this trick from the foam supplies, the knife cuts into the foam like butter and a cool neat cut too, I wish I knew about this trick years ago!!!

 

 

I discovered too that cutting smaller lengths made it easier to pull out evenly - below:

 

My Domestic Duties Chp.2 art works with their fragile little movable bits; arms, legs and bases all safe and snug in the foam - atleast I can rest easy they will all travel safely inside the crates whilst in transit.

To date; Teasing The Domestic is booked for 2013 and fast filling for 2014.

final week

This coming week will be the last chance to see my solo exhibition Domestic Duties Chp.2 A burden shared is a burden halved.  Sunday 24th June, 2012 at Studio 4 Gallery.  Incorporating an interactive component has truely been an enriching experience for me, the joy in seeing people participating and 'feeling' apart of the show has been wonderful!  And it was lovely to see folk come in and find their word they added to the collective.

I thought I'd share a few of my favourite pieces for the folk that are unable to come to the exhibition...

Tea Cup & Doily Saucer (12 Sets each) - etched word on Southern Ice Porcelain, various sizes, (each Tea Cup sits on a doily saucer even though the one on the right is not displayed on one).

All set up

It’s been a full-on week installing the exhibition - a few snap shots...

I wanted to include as many ONE words as I could in the exhibition and decided to have a few placed randomly on one wall. There were so many words to choose from I opted for the most re-occurring ones plus a few that took my fancy. This bit was a killer on the shoulders putting them in place, slowly I might add, one letter at a time.

Then hung from the Folding Clothesline Installation - the lighting has cast shadows and looks great!
And the Marrick Quick Dry Installation with strings of Southern Ice porcelain Pegs (with a carved word in the clay) - each string hung from a Dolly Peg, and the Pianola scroll in the background.

1000 words & more - Domestic Duties

It seemed only fitting to include the complete list of all the ONE word(s) compiled for this exhibition. I have been collecting words for over two years now, every opportunity I would ask for a word and noted it down in my trusty exercise book - using the ole fashioned method and using a pencil!  So many people have generously helped me along the way, even you my blogging friends have helped in my 200th blog post giveaway and I am very grateful!

I came across some old pianola scrolls recently and thought I'd try my hand at typing all my words down on the scroll a full length of a vertical wall approx. 2.3 metres.  One word that has repeatedly rolled off my tongue of late is THANKFUL. I've been so thankful to everyone for their help to collect my ONE words, Glen's sister Michelle even delivered Jordan's typewriter (below) from Brissy over the weekend for me!  (thanks Mich!).  Over 1000 words soon had to be repeated as I typed around a negative space creating the word THANKFUL.  Looks pretty groovy!
