exciting news!

Exciting developments have emerged since my last post so I thought it was high time I shared the news! Papillon has been selected to exhibit at two regional galleries in 2017. Having received such an overwhelming response with visitors to Caloundra Regional Gallery
I decided to tour the show.

Papillon's first showing will be in a group exhibition entitled You, Me and a Cup of Tea at Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery from 2nd February to 19th March 2017. Curated by Zoe Blandford, both installations that comprise Papillon will showcase in Gallery One and The Vault. Also in Gallery One will feature artworks by three nationally selected artists, and artworks from ten local artists. The iconic building has a unique history of which 57 years (1921-1978) of its life was home to the Commonwealth Bank where several changes to the building's architecture took place creating two concrete bank vaults - used today as the gallery's collection storage and The Vault installation space. The Vault is a groovy little space, having two adjoining rooms - In Flight will suspend from the ceiling in both The Vault gallery rooms, while In the Light of Truth will be displayed in Gallery One.

Then later in the year, Papillon will exhibit in gallery 2, 3 & 4 at Redland Art Gallery, Cleveland from 20 August to 8 October 2017. Officially opened in 2003, the Cleveland Gallery is located in town, corner Middle and Bloomfield Streets, with cafe's and shops nearby and only minutes from the ocean. On our recent visit and by local advice we took a short drive to the Lighthouse at Cleveland Point for lunch, and omgward what a treat that turned out to be, lunch with a stunning view...

Papillon highlights

I thought it would be nice to share a few highlights (photos) from Papillon while also taking this opportunity to thank all those involved, especially the staff, install team and volunteers at Caloundra Regional Gallery. I'd like to start by thanking the newly appointed Gallery Curator, Hamish Sawyer for his support and for writing a review on Papillon for my eight-page catalogue (available upon request pls email info@kimschoenberger.com ). And to the rest of the staff, Sam, Toni, Jenny, Lauren and Liz including the install team, Mal, and Simon, thanks - installing over five thousand butterflies was quite an undertaking, to say the least!

Thanks to everyone who went and saw the show, I am extremely humbled by your support Papillon warmly received over two thousand visitors to the gallery.

I would also like to thank Jennifer, Vivienne and Tony for saving all those used tea bags for me! Spilling over from the Expressions of Love's store, I'm so glad I had the foresight to stock pile their tea bags - it took nearly two years to reach the desired amount used in Papillon.

This photo was captured by Tony Bryant, I like the detail in this shot!

I really enjoyed participating in the process of install, all hands were on deck (L-R; Simon, Tony, Jenny, and Hamish) almost finished, three thousand butterflies were pinned to the wall for the installation In the Light of Truth,

...and over two thousand were hung from a net in In Flight. Install team pictured L-R; Simon, Sam, Toni, and Mal.

Opening night drew a modest crowd and was shared amongst family and friends, old and new with guest speaker Dr. Nita C Lester who kept everyone enthralled with her speech. Following photos by Lindsay Ham.

Celebrating the opening with Hamish Sawyer, Gallery Curator,

...and (L-R) also exhibiting artist Karen Richards (Flora non Evidens) and Janet de Boer OAM.

The intimacy shared with Uncovered Conversations was a delight, as were the surprise visits from close friends. Following photos by Barry Alsop.

Tech talk with Jennifer - explaining how the images were transferred onto the tea bags.

My dearest (and fiercely independent) friend Petrus, who took advantage of his visit and delivered his cache of used tea bags.

Both installation view, plus in the foreground Petrus having a cup of tea before driving himself home.

Another highlight was facilitating the Adults and Children's Butterfly Making Workshops - actually, there were so many highlights, too many to list in one blog post! More photos can be enjoyed via my website in NEWS and/or EXHIBITIONS

ArtsCool workshop - results!

The ArtsCool workshops (previous post) were so much fun, and the outcome from them was too good not to share....

Day one - morning and afternoon class - Clay Minions. Some precious little gems here!

Day two catered for two different age groups, with Leaf Animals in the morning for the younger ones,

...and Tea Bag Collage in the afternoon for the older children - being inspired by German Dada artist Hannah Hoch and photomontage using magazine cut-outs and used tea bags with some fabulous results!

The results speak for themselves - we have such a talented bunch of little peeps here on the Sunny Coast, don't you think!

ArtsCool Workshops

I will be facilitating more fun and creative children workshops at Caloundra Regional Gallery this coming week as part of their June ArtsCool program.

On Monday 27 and Tuesday 28, I have four workshops on offer, delivered over the two days. The first two workshops held on Monday, children will be able to get down and dirty making clay Minions, using sundry clay their little creations can be taken home and painted later. Please note: due to popular demand we have cancelled the proposed Abstract Assemblage workshop and replaced it with a second clay Minions workshop, catering for ages 5-12 years.

Then on Tuesday, children will have the opportunity to participate in either the Leaf Animal workshop (Ages 5-8 years) or take inspiration from my Papillon exhibition and create a tea bag collage (Ages 9-12).

Homage to Hannah Hoch, Photomontage (detail) 2016.
Example, Tea Bag Collage workshop

There are only a few spaces left in the Tea Bag Collage workshop so if anyone is interested, please follow this link to book online and reserve a place J however, due to a large number of little creatives living on the coast, all the other workshops are fully booked.

workshop results

What a wonderful adults Butterfly Making workshop at the Caloundra gallery yesterday!
A full capacity class made for varied and interesting results.

All bums on seats busy at work...

An array of rusty objects were laid out on the table for experimenting with. Cobblers Wax was used to create a textured design by rubbing on to the paper surface with the rusty object underneath.

Experimenting on tissue paper first to get a feel for the rubbing technique and elements of design...

Watercolour pencils for adding a little colour...

And special friendships that brighten up a day...

Plus the mandatory memento group shot...

Papillon - Gallery Events Public Program

In conjunction with my Papillon exhibition, I will be facilitating two separate Butterfly Making Workshops held at Caloundra Regional Gallery. The first workshop for adults is this Saturday, with the second workshop for the kiddies on the following Saturday - finer dets below...

In these workshops, we'll examine elements of design and create abstract imagery on a used tea bag with discarded materials using the Frottage technique and then create a tea bag butterfly to take home as a keepsake.

Spaces are limited and bookings are essential - there are only a couple of spaces left in the adults workshop, so if you're thinking of coming please book in via the 'book online' link below. I am looking forward to a fun couple of days! J

Please direct all inquiries to the Gallery - workshop details are as follows:
Saturday 11 June 11am to 1pm - Adults Butterfly Making Workshop ($10 Ages 18+)
