A small 2D piece that came together from discards - combining the two elements of clay and steel on canvas.

The small flat rectangle steel sheets were found in a fire pit at a salvage yard I'm not sure what they have come from, among the burnt ashes though were which looked like a melted computer casing or an electrical box, so they could have come from the internal parts.

The clay scrolls are created from scraping off the remnants of clay left on the wheel head after throwing a pot. Getting them at the right consistancy of dryness to get a perfect scroll and stamped.

Finishing it off by stitching it to the canvas with recycled copper wire and nailing it to the frame.

Last week I attended the opening exhibition BERBAGI currently on display until 3rd March, 2012 at the University of the Sunshine Coast Gallery. The word Berbagi is Bahasa Indonesia, the official language of Bali meaning 'sharing'. The show curated by Di Tait Queensland papermaker and fibre artist is simply stunning and is a result of a series of papermaking and paper sculpture workshops that were held in Bali in 2011.

So very inspiring and well worth the visit if your in the area! A snippet of works on show, to share with you and my overseas bloggers...

Domestic Duties update: a BIG thank you to...

As the new year takes off, I am in full swing into planning my next events for the year.... with an update on what is happening in the land of DOMESTIC DUTIES.

Firstly, a I need to acknowledge and give a HUGE BIG THANK YOU to Dorothy, Nicola and Tania. They have been diligently collecting ONE words for me since the beginning and I am ever grateful of their time and enthusiasm.

Dorothy collected over two hundred words,

Nicola kindly took my booklet to her market stall "Wild Nature" in Cairns,

and Tania at The Clay Shed got onboard and asked customers to add to the collective.

Next on the agenda for my DOMESTIC DUTIES PROJECT - reclaiming my booklets I have started to create artworks and developing a thoery as to the collective and will be undertaking a Solo Exhibition and Installation "Domestic Duties" at Studio 4 Gallery, Marcoola from Thurs 31st May to Sun 24th June, 2012.

opening night & new works on display

Upon arrival to Studio 4 Gallery's latest exhibition last week you were welcomed with an ambience of intimacy lit with candlelight emulating a radiant glow over the artworks and the air was filled with a warm balmy summer breeze..... It could very well have been an intentional ambience mind you, however it wasn't. It was due to the electricity company cutting the power for some reason, unexplained and unnotified! However inconvenient, it did create a lovely ambience to the evening, and depite the suituation (which would have sent me into a spin), Directors Jennifer and Richard Stiller remained totally calm and in control, and made everyone feel welcomed and relaxed, as the nibbles were served and the wine flowed.

Thinking that was set for the evening... a large roar from the crowd was heard as the power came back on and just in time for the official opening speech.

In between working towards exhibitions I like to allow myself freedom of expression to create - letting go of all preconcieved outcomes. I created a triptych earlier last year made from stump caps, barb wire rusted steel and the like and have been waiting for the right time and place to showcase them.

I was invited to participate in Studio 4 Gallery Jan/Feb group exhibition where each artist were asked to exhibit three artworks. The exhibition is being hung today with the official opening this Saturday 7th January, 2012 from 5.30pm.

Corrigated Iron

Yesterday we went to see the Henri Matisse Exhibition at GOMA (Gallery of Modern Art) - Queensland Art Gallery. ‘Matisse: Drawing Life’ is a major exhibition of works on paper by Henri Matisse and includes more than 300 drawings, prints and illustrated books. Of course no photographs were allowed in the exhibit so you will have to visit QAG's website.

Although in other parts of the gallery camera's were allowed and I managed to get a couple of pictures in, that were oh so very inspiring for me. Here's a few, as it goes they are all made from corrigated iron. I must apologise I only got one of the artists names and title - 'note to self' for next time, remember to write them down!!!

We're being served a real treat for Christmas with a rich red carpeted driveway from our Delonix regia Poinciana trees. We're normally a custom to having a lavender driveway from the Jacaranda petals in October, but this is our first real show we've experienced since living here, there in full bloom at the moment and are putting on a magnificant display.

Ofcourse these aren't my Poincana trees I borrowed them off the web (mine are too hard to photograph due to other trees obstructing my view) they show what the actual tree does look like when given full potiental to grow, and are mighty fine specimens indeed!

hubcap arrives safely!

My hubcap made its way to Pennsylvania safe and sound and is up on the Landfillart's website p.39 with all the other enteries which to date stands at 775 and counting. Only 226 to go until it reaches the desired number of 1,041 hubcaps.

A Letter a Week 2011

A Letter a Week - the alphabet challenge - in short; 52 weeks in a year, 26 letters in an alphabet = two alphabets a year.

In wrapping up 2011 and almost finished my second alphabet, exploring the KISS Method (Keep It Simple Sweetheart) I chose to use recycled tea bags with what was at hand in my sewing room at the time of making each letter, to see all the juicy details on each letter visit ALaW

Wanting to display them individually I decided to showcase them within their own little box. I had some little wooden boxes made up and I've painted them white, now I'm just waiting on the glass to enclose them.

Words cannot convey the joy I am feeling this month, or even for this whole year matter of fact!

Earlier this year I contacted Stephanie Outridge-Field to see if she would write about my studio practice. Stephanie's career in ceramics spans over thirty years, her work is just devine and not only is Stephanie a lovely person, she is a mentor and an inspiration! I feel very honoured and previliged to be featured in the latest edition The Journal of Australian Ceramics (50/3 Nov, 2011, which can be purchased on-line by the way...) and to have had an article written by Stephanie.

landfillart.org - an artist reclamation project

A couple of months ago blogging buddy Jo Murray sent me a link to Landfillart.org to summarise, taken from the Landfillart's website:

"Landfillart is an international effort encompassing one-thousand-forty-one (1,041) artists to claim a piece of rusted metal garbage and create fine art."

The 1,041 pieces of rusted metal are actually old automobile hub caps from the 1930’s through the 1970’s. Each hub cap, after being cleaned and primed, is affectionately called a “metal canvas.” Although most “metal canvases” have been transformed by the artist using oil or acrylic paint, some have been weaved on, glued or screwed or welded to, or made into fine sculpture.

Although the project is in its infancy (I hope to have it completed by 2012,) it evolved from a simple idea of taking forty-one old rusted hub caps and creating forty-one pieces of great art. The second phase has already started with the acquisition of one thousand additional (1000) rusted hub caps which will be turned into cleaned and primed “metal canvases. The project will continue with finding one thousand (1000) talented artists who believe in this project.

The third phase will involve publishing a book on the project showcasing all one thousand forty one (1,041) completed “metal canvases.”

The fourth and final phase will involve choosing 200 metal canvases that adequately represent the project and create a traveling show. The book and traveling show will publically portray the global art community's effort to positively impact the environment through repurposing previous metal waste into great landfillart. - Ken Marquis, founder.

No hesitations for me, already on a mission myself to reclaim and recycled landfill, not even considering how difficult it could be to source a hubcap I wanted to participate!! A text to friend Jen (who works in the car part industry) replies, "a 1930-70's hubcap, that may be challenging, but I'll ask around." Well, it just so happens that Jen did source me hubcap, a 1970's Holden hubcap, and, by the end of the day, howz that for chance! Once again my ever welcoming laws of 'Chance' plays a role in my process...

And, 1041 resonated with me - 1041 always seems to crop up in my life - ever since I lived in a haunted house numbered 1041 some 20yrs back! Have you ever encountered a familar number or happening, happening to you all the time?? Well, mine are the numbers 1041. They can appear on a shopping receipt; being the time of sale, everytime I look at a digital clock - 1041 am or pm, it's uncanny how many times they crop up! This was just another one of those 'times'.

So here's my yummy hubcap... front and back.

The idea is to create a 'metal canvas', it was so tempting to keep it rusted but oddly enough for some reason even I was compelled to polish. Glen, as he walked by said to me, "What are you doing!" in that tone (knowing I'm usually pouring acid on to make it rust). I just looked up at him and said, "I dunno! I know this is strange for me, but for some reason I just feel I need to." polish it that is.

As a kid I spent hours polishing the chrome on my Dragstar pushbike, I rode my deadlytreadly everyway and I took great pride in that shine. I think the act of polishing transported me back to the carefree days of my childhood..sigh!

String Art - I've had a hankering to play with copperwire and string art. After contemplating what I was going to create, I decided to take an entirely different approach and try my hand a something new.

Firstly, I drilled holes and glued in horseshoe nails with industrial strenght two part apoxy - making an outer circle, then started the art of string building up several layers....

The second circular ring of horseshoe nails in the centre, numbered to guide me with the copperwiring sequence.

And a third coloured copperwire for interest.

Apart from the final polish the finshed piece above, and below all safely wrapped and boxed, and in the post. My hubcap is now on it's way to Pennsylvania!!! :-D

I've been hankering to get back into my making I've not had much time of late to produce works, it's all been about openings and things - so to keep me inspired and still intouch with my studio, I've just been tinkering about on my assemblage materials to be a little more organised.

When out I'm and about sourcing new materials my day is always jam packed with other stuff to do, when I get home I just plonk the bits and leave them to sort out later, sometimes, later never comes. The piles end up building into a right ole' mess, and I end up with stuff everywhere! This weekend was all about sorting things out. I operate best when things are more organised....then I noticed how kool they looked as I started sorting into similars, and had to photograph them!

And now my excess stock pile has a new system of storage - this is Glen's very first trailer for our Landscaping business Enviro Scapes we started over 10yrs ago, it's aged (rusted) so nicely and we didn't want to dump it just yet. The axel broke one evening at the end of his work day reversing into our driveway, thankfully it happened at home and not on the highway! It has fit so perfectly over my original storage pad and now I can see everything better for use.

I would love to share with you... for those that couldn't make the evening, a few photographs from last night's Artist by Artist opening. It was such a wonderful night to let our hair down, relax, and mingle. To bring together a night of celebration is like icing on the cake - all our hard work over the past few months in making the films and to share with our family, friends and community makes it much more special.

Small Works / Small Town + BIG crowd!

Last night's opening exhibit SMALL WORKS / SMALL TOWN saw a HUGE crowd - it was my first time at an opening for Rosebed St Gallery and far out what a crowd, it was packed!

All gathered to celebrate the official opening,

...with drinks and nibbles downstairs, in anticipation the doors were finally opened for all to view and purchase artworks.

And look who I found in the crowd! Good buddy and also exhibiting artist Jo Murray

Designed as a takeaway art show loads of artworks were literally walking out the door! Sales were shared all round, Jo and I both sold work. It was fantastic some artists were even needing to re-stock the empty spaces.

It's a busy time at the moment, and I've had no posts on art being made -it's all been about what's happening and where. I'm really missing my making time but I guess that's the ebb and flow of things. The whole idea of it I suppose is to exhibit and sell, as much as I'd like to keep everything I make...

I have posted this photo before - the day has arrived! The official opening of the SMALL WORKS / SMALL TOWN Exhibit Friday 28th Oct 6.30pm - Rosebed St Gallery, Eudlo.

I really like this piece "Unicorn" and it's story on how it evolved. A funny thing, I had this piece of steel (the body part) for ages and nothing was coming to me, I knew that something was in it but no matter how many times I picked it up and contemplated it - mental block!!! Anyhows, I let it go. Then one morning while reading "Psychology and Alchemy" by C. G. Jung, he made reference to unicorns in alchemy, and out of the blue I saw the unicorn in the piece of steel. I whipped out of bed and took off for the bit of steel and presto, the Unicorn was formed!

To my supprise the invite features my Unicorn and makes it even more special...

This post is carried on from my previous blog post and is in reference to the IMAGINE THAT! Creative Showcase Event, with a sneak peek of my Domestic Duties project display preparations.

On Saturday 15th October the Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance is hosting an evening full of entertainment including Pecha Kucha #8, Concert performances, Fashion parades, Live Art Artists, Gallery exhibitions and much, much more...

I've been silently working away at a few assemblages the last month for an exhibition coming up in October at Rosebed Street Gallery. The concept behind this exhbition is to showcase small artworks from a selective of artists. With six to eight pieces from each artist, the artworks will be displayed over a period of 26th October, 2011 to 8th January, 2012.

A couple of weeks ago I had an early garage sale run for some fun, on the hunt for some domesticated memorabillia for my...

And what a hunt it was, with this fantastic find!!! Check this out, its a MARRICK QUICK DRY, a portable vintage clothes drying rack. I guess it was designed for convenience with its nifty fold away system.

Oh so compact and oh so perfect! Just the thing to pack and take with me for my display next month at the IMAGINE THAT! Creative Showcase event hosted by Sunshine Coast Creative Alliance, and not forgetting to mention my groovy business cards seen top and bottom to help me spread the word.

Here's my creative take on Pat's story, once again tho' I cannot take full credit for this fab video, because if it wasn't for Pat and Natalija's help and patience it wouldn't have come together as good as it did! Earlier this year I was asked to do a commission and transform some rusted farm machinery that was wasting away under a grand old tree into a sculpture with the theme of Divesting. The machinery was originally used on the same property for cultivation in an Avocado plantation some years ago.

The property was being sub-divided to sell and also housed an old shed with loads of rusty bits and pieces, I was asked to have a rummage to see if anything else I might need add to the piece before the property sold. Not being one to offend, I happily rummaged...

Here is the farm machinery part - majorly heavy as, I might add!

I am presuming these were the discs to plow the fields...

After living with the machinery for a bit and changing it at different angles, it wasn't long before I saw a Phoenix, it was clear as ever, even fitting in with the theme Divesting. Ofcourse the plow discs the wings!!! Again one of those spontaneous happenings that are meant to be, and a day out from bringing the pieces home I found the brazier (below) at an op shop which I could see as being perfect for the body, as you'll see below...

Taking shape, an image from behind the brazier is now in place, the wings are welded on and a tail is in the making.

A detail of the beak, as is!! I couldn't have formed this even better if I'd tried, nature at its best with its own way of sculpting to perfection!

A lucky find - the legs, aren't they awesome? No, I can not take credit for these....someone else had a passion for sculpting with rusted materials, I saw these at the tip some years ago and I just had to have them, I knew I'd use them one day and this was their day of beckoning!

Well I am so overly excited this morning - I've been waiting in anticipation to get my hands on my parcel that's been sitting on the kitchen table all week!!! Because today is my birthday and a couple of months ago I commissioned Robyn Gordon from the blogsite Artpropelled to make my birthday present. Robyn is an amazing woodcarver who lives in South Africa. On her blog she showcases artists from all over the world, I drool at the feast of imagery with every post. I am so thrilled to be the proud owner of a Robyn Gordon and ofcourse I just had to blog about it. It has found a prominent place in my place and here it is...

My artwork 'making' time at the moment has been a little limited - a few things are on the go, this little piece is in a series of three. One already sold even before I finished it or had a chance to blog about it. They're titled The Dancer I, II & III - Their Dancer's of life, a happy dance, to dance of joy and happiness. A rare find really, the steel in the shape of a person exactly found as you see it, with the additon of the base and spur of course. Then I added perspex with three words etched 'Beauty', 'Harmony' and 'Rythym', each Dancer their having own narrative.

And I've been busy spending time working on the marketing side of things, one inparticular photography. As a bonus of being involved in the ABC Open Artist by Artist I met Natalija Brunovs, Nat was our Producer 'was' being said that she is not longer working with ABC Open. However, to my delight I discovered Natalija is a photographer and booked her in for a session as soon as she was available. Here's a shot of her portable photographic studio in my studio!

It was such a wet drizzly day, fortunately all the work I needed photographing was in the studio and close at hand. Just fantasitc photographs, it's amazing the difference it makes with quality images. Here are a few...

domestic duties update

The response to my Domestic Duties Project has been overwhelming!!! It has only been a few weeks since I officially launched the project and literally hundreds of ONE words are rolling in. The idea of creating additional booklets placed with some friends has added to the growing list as well, I even have a booklet in Cairns (Thanks Nic, and Tania).

Of course these ONE words are all in aid of adding to my DD project - a collective of thoughts and feelings on the concept toward Domestic Duties.

So far - the 'feeling' dominating the chores around the home are - yes you guessed it!!!! Mostly negative feelings of being uninspired, a necessity, time consuming, a chore etc... although there are the occasional positive word like; refreshed, cleansing and rewarding... Even though my comments are focused on washing and pegs, this project is open to other tasks that cover domestic duties, even mowing the lawn - so men can even join in too.

Along my search for words and for a Hills Hoist clothes line - collecting other washing memorobilia has developed as in my last post with a call for old pegs. For most part, each ONE word(s) will be written onto a wooden peg - so the other unusual or plastic pegs or memorobilia I collect along the way will transform into artworks.

A bucket of discarded pegs soon became a Peg Mandala, still in progress - it will have a wooden ring behind to hold them in place and possible spokes for the centre part.

Open studio - and the neighbours to the rescue!

Today was a wet drizzly day but it didn't deter the many visitors to my studio for Arts Connect Inc's Creative Spaces - open studios. Amongst them a bus load of 20 + . We all gathered around under the house (out of the rain) checking out my working space of kilns, the welding gear, sculptures, and my rusty stock pile of bits and bobs...

...when the bus driver comes rushing down to elerted us that the bus had got bogged in the wet grass!!

After doing the ring around, our closest neighbour Gaye and longstanding resident of the area, rang another neighbour... minutes later we heard the sound of a Tractor in the distance and coming up the track. Thankfully Peter (our other neighbour) came to the rescue to save the day and hauled the bus out of the wet grass and back onto the gravel track again. Phew! That was close, these grounds are sure slippery in this weather - check out the heavy mist we had going.

Back on track, the bus is safe and sound and awaits its passenger's to be taken to the next port of call.

ps... a HUGE big thank you to Peter, and a little birdy told me it was his birthday today -Happy Birthday Pete!

It is so wonderful to see that the word has spread long and wide, the results have been amazing, with visitors making their way through over 30 artist studios. One lady that told me, she and her friend had visited 16 studios in one day!

Yesterday I delivered three artworks to 'MOMENTUM' Brisbane Grammar School 42nd Art Show (19th and 20th August, 2011) - I was invited to participate some months ago and I have been working on a couple of assemblage art pieces to have ready in time to exhibit. In the meantime...I was sent the paperwork for requirements etc... as you do, and to my supprise I saw that it was by invitation only.

Now seen as one of Queensland's largest Art shows, Brisbane Grammar School 2011 Exhibition showcases over 600 individual works of art including paintings, prints, photos, jewellery and sculptures.

Maleny Image 9: Introduced COMA's next exhibition is to coincide with Weed Week - observed throughout the Shire and promoted through the Maleny Library. Our challenge to make an artwork via researching introduced species and how they have affected - or infected - our local enviroment...

My entry: "Farmer's friend!" the ole Cobblers' Pegs Bidens pilosa and ofcourse using my found objects approach...

My spin on it, is not so much on the negitave effects it has on our enviroment but how to perhaps consider its usefulness.

...and what better way to use of my old typewriter from High School to translate Cobblers' Pegs story. It was a bit hard though without the backspace key!!

DOMESTIC DUTIES PROJECT - Seeking your thoughts!

A FUN project that I have been toying with for some time now, and as it appears, as I go back over my notes its nearly two years since I first started collecting and collating words. TWO YEARS!!!! Can you believe it - like FAR-OUT! time flies when your having fun....

Anyhows, about the project.... I don't know about you, but I seem to be losing interest in the need to keep a preciously deliciously clean pad. Yer sure hygiene is important and I like to be neat and tidy, but the thought of having to be chained to the ole dreary domestic duties is somewhat similar to the discomfort of a wet sock being thrown and landing on you on a cold, wet, and windy winters day!!! Which brings me to this project. I'm over it - domestic duties! And this is my chance to vent a little... scroll down to read what its all about, and feel free to join in the ventfest!

trailer & fireplace parts = sculpture

Following on from my previous post - the trailer dismantle and op shop fireplace. Here's a photo of the fireplace dismantled, for you to see how it broke down into six parts...

Fresh material is always inspiring.... In this sculpture I've used one piece from the fireplace - the front grill; pictured top middle, and the springs and triangles from the trailer and a random car (?) part that tied it altogether.

Welding the triangle bits onto a car part of some sort, a closer image below... and in the negative space I have inserted a clay stoneware bone to stand which fit into the hole on the shaft.

Welded and cleaned up by removing all sharp edges etc... the finished piece 'Dance of Creation' stands approx 1.2mtr high...

trailer dismantle

One of our trailers had come to the end of its life, to the point were the base was starting to rust out. And, ofcourse I'd had my eye on it for some time now day dreaming of what I could make from it...sculpture fodder, for sure!!

The floor cut into four panels and cleared of excess flakey rust crustacean. These three panels are similar in size and scream triptych to me! Providing the one on the right holds up, its extremely fragile.

The dismantle begins...first off comes the easiest - the back panel.

Then off with the wheel guards, side panels and put to one side.

Yipee, my collection is growing :-D

ooowe, some interesting bits here... love those springs and triangle pieces!

Off comes the floor to make into those yummy panels seen in the first photo

hmm even the shell looks interesting, minus the wheels ofcourse!

The whole process was so inspiring I just had to make a sculpture with the springs and triangle bits - that'll be my next post and I will have an image of the fireplace (op shop must have from below) in the six parts...

Out on my rounds a couple of weeks ago I came across an op shop, and sometimes you see something that well, you just can't go past! Yep, it was a 'must have' a fireplace that de-assembles into six parts. Like, totally awesome!!!!

Diamond on the inside

'MALENY IMAGE 8 : between the lines' - Take two! Last month we - COMA (Collaborative of Maleny Artists) members we were asked to create an artwork inspired by a book we had recently read on the theme 'between the lines', and exhibited at Rosetta's bookshop. We've now been given another opportunity to re-exhibit on the same theme, this time in the Maleny library starting on Monday11th July and continuing until Monday 25th July.

Seeing both artworks "Peace Within" and "Rest, Live, Seek" sold in the first showing, I was given the ok to make another piece. This time though, it is hanging space only and still set within the size of 120mm x 120mm. Being a 3D artist I had to reconsider my angle! Fortunately I've been entertaining the idea of two dimensional assemblages, so what a great opportunity to try my hand at it.

Focusing on the same book I chose for the first exhibit, a small booklet I came across, a chance find really, on Australian sculptor Ian McKay , some of his works are large scale, rusted, welded steel and found objects. After learning a little on Ian, it is his philosophy that I resonate with most. He is not necessarily driven by the need for prizes or accolades and likes to work with a piece rather than using control to dictate the final outcome. It has been said, "He sculptures are neither what you would describe as appealing, for McKay a sculpture has to have the right amount of bad taste."

With all this in mind, once again I gathered some steel (small scale) to see what evolved. This time I added another element to the mix, perspex. Another thing I have been contemplating... the centre is mirrored perspex and surrounding is clear (although it is hard to see in the photograph).

While making this piece, I kept hearing the song "Diamonds on the inside"by Ben Harper, just those four words - on repeat, over and over and over and over and over ..... With my assemblages there always seems to be an underling message within them if I listen close enough. This one however was quiet loud and clear, with the repetitive tune. If you were to look at this piece in the flesh, close up, you would see your reflection looking back at you. What I see, is, that this precious diamond is you!

Expanding on and exploring my options with the theme of Connection and my rusted people...

2D or 3D? Lately I am seeing the assemblages two dimensionally rather than three dimensional, which is totally out of the norm. While playing with placement in many different ways have been great in theory and visually, practically in a two dimensional approach for assembling - not so good. It is two totally different techniques in the making.

I'm loving the designs they have created along the way though. Firstly in the shape of a heart, then the idea of them hanging from a bike chain (which I had intended as the pulse of a heartbeat) seen in my previous post.

Then a couple more placements seen below... this one really appealed to my senses symbolically and was do'able but I felt it didn't translate the message of my morale' behind the work enough.

And besides I had three left over, these guys were left out on a limb - after all the notion was and is to connect it all together as one! Here the outter frame once taken away gives another interesting look, although this one is not possible without a support frame, because without it would be much too fragile to hold up.

I have been playing with the notion of the newspaper people cutout's that I did at primary school, so I did a test sample and lined up my rusty folk in the same manner. This option gives me a strong sense of connection, the all important movement within the legs and the freedom to make it into a 2D piece with loads of strength.

PS... see the little guy on his own, the singular man in the middle between the newspaper cutout and the connected peoples? Well, he was the first test piece I made to see if my idea was going to work and seeing the theme is all about Connection I'd like to make a connection with my blogging folk out there and I've decided to give him away! It seems like forever since I've got in to have a play! My 'life' behind the scenes have left little time to get in and make, let alone blog about it. Yes, their have been some nights of socialising, but I have been busy! With - filming, interviewing, throwing, glazing, firing, pricing, packaging, delivering, all in an aid to supply galleries, art centre's, set-up film shoots, and with only three weeks away is the Medieval Festival!

Amidst the juggling I am wanting to enter into a few competitions to get my assemblage works out there more, which takes me into a theme and exploration... This one is for a comp and the theme being 'Connection'. What I am seeing when I look deeper into my take on connecting - I see many people joined and/or linked together, as we are all one and the same, different but the same.

To explore this concept, if we were to look at a stranger and see them as yourself how would this make you feel toward them, would that give a greater sense of seeing that we are just the same as the next person, and would that then change our perspective on how we would be towards them?? I ask myself these many questions often, and the more I contemplate these questions the more it helps me become aware of being a better person - to offer assistance, be friendly, nice and smile, and reach out to someone that maybe having a bad day, after all at the end of the day, they are all just on the same journey as me aren't they? Just in a different way...

Then if I was to take this concept on a boarder sense with my deeper concerns for 'us' as a society, it would probably get too heavy.... to skim however, I feel and have learnt in my world to heal / help (my/our world) the healing process begins with our inner turbulance, to turn and face that which we avoid begins the release... One thing I have learnt, one needs to nurture oneself first inorder to be able to reach out and give others... and with that in mind takes me into my rusty pile.......

People emerging and then exploring placement with the symbolic nature of healing at the heart centre in the shape of a heart,

detail taking shape - one man made...

then introducing a chain, that which links us altogether, as we are all one and the same... all connected some way or another... that 'light' within us - the spirit that gives us life is the same as the next persons it all comes from the same source. It's in us, the tree's, your pet, everything!!!

and then literal movement within the legs, could suggest a sublte movement in one's perspective, perhaps?

This week has been like totally......full-on! And all about filming - Firstly, it was Pat in front of the camera at Voices on the Coast held at the University. Pat Flynn was one of a few select guest author's to speak to over one hundred or more lively bunch of school kids in each session. It was like a massive bookfest, how lucky to be given such a fab opportunity, I don't recall having anything of this nature when I was at school!

T'is a sight to behold! Yellow daisy like flowers, I'm not of sure its name... it's such a stunning display to irrestible not to take some happy snaps. As it seems I'm not the only one, I must have been past this spectacular view dozens of times recently and each time someone is taking a picture of it. I'm not supprised.

Matchbox show exhibits

An exhibition of ceramic artworks in a matchbox, titled "Up in Smoke" a fitting title don't you think? Michael Ciavarella is the brain child behind this groovy concept. The project began last year at the Clay Energy conference in NSW, Michael's goal is to reach 5000 boxes and will take "Up in Smoke" to Finland's International Ceramics Conference in 2014. My humble little offering is among the many, the number of entries is growing with each day..

"Up in Smoke" is now exhibiting at Noosa Regional Gallery, Tewantin - continues to June 5th.

It's been some time since I have posted any news about my ceramics on my blog and my reason being I have decided to use facebook as my primary platform for it (if you are wanting to see what's going on in the studio, all you need do is, scroll down, click on the fb link on this home page).

These days my ceramics practice is divided between my new found love of welding assemblages, and as it seems the 'clay & found objects' are starting to somewhat meld toward each other, as seen in the first couple of images... I'm straying alittle from my familiar coarse clay body to explore the pure white fine delicate body of southern ice porcelain - it's such a beautiful clay to work with and when fired to stoneware, feels like the skin of a new born - it's the ala carte of all porcelain (in my books anyhows!). I'm really enjoying breaking away from the norm, to have a play, and see what will evolve...

My ABC Open Artist by Artist - Artist Pat Flynn

I'd like to introduce PAT FLYNN my partner for the ABC Open - Artist by Artist project... It's like where do I start! In this post you will notice some extra links - it'll take you into the world of Pat.

Pat is an accomplished writer, (ex-professional Tennis player and teacher), modest and humble man and it is such an honour to be producing this documentry on him and under the professional guidance of ABC Open Producer Natalija Brunovs.

Four Sights

For me this assemblage has a resolution feel to it - not insomuch as to interpret an ending per se more of an understanding, coming to an awareness or an accomplishment of... until the next chapter, anyhows.

My recent mood and emotion has most definitely being a direct influrence on what has been coming through within my assemblages and upon looking back on the process an evident religious spiritual theme has appeared - such as the sculptures 'House of the Holy : Enlightenend Ones, Trinity, and Temple Within...'

The majority of my process in the assembling is preety much an automatic pilot and chance happenings - once I've attained an allowing, a freeing from all and any conscious control and thought, can the create energy be drawn upon. Then later observations, once I've given time to breathe between each process, am I able to formulate the technical side of things; the drilling, welding etc... into the construction of the piece. You know tho' - the best observations I have had with my works are actually the comments made by the viewer. Yes! I love, encourage and welcome these comments - for they help me in the way of looking at and seeing the piece - which I may not have be aware of...they are gold moments and at times become a pivotal turning point, in the direction in my life - and I am thankful for all those comments!

Radiant Soul

Radiant Soul - is a sturdy piece to say the least with a 10LB Sledge Hammer head at the base, and a barbeque burner welded vertically upright. The stoneware clay bones protrude from the burner are representations of one's own perspective or persona that radiates outward.

This piece emanates as being feminine, previously my reference to the majority of my assemblages has been masculine, until one day someone pointed out that they saw them as feminine. Puzzled over this comment at the time, however now yes, I believe he was right!

Still on the topic for COMA (Collaborative of Maleny Artists) member's exhibition Maleny Image 8 : between the lines... and yes as mentioned in my previous two posts - only one entry person! I think this is artwork number seven... The theme is to make an artwork based on a book recently read within a size frame of 120mm square (3D).

I came across this small booklet in a secondhand bookstore on an Australian Sculptor Ian McKay - a career survey of Sculpture, published by Art Gallery of NSW, 1984. His works are large scale of welded steel and rusted metal / objects. Curious to see what I could come up with I gathered together tiny steel pieces to apply to his large scale works. As it turned out I only needed four pieces of steel and a happy accident fell into place while assembling it.

These works came about while contemplating my entry into COMA's next exhibition (Collaborative of Maleny Artists organised by Ken Munsie) 'MALENY IMAGE 8 : between the lines' to be exhibited at Rosetta Books, Maleny (27 Mayto 12 June, 2011).

So....... we are asked to create an artwork inspired by a book that we have recently read. Strictly a non-fiction kinda gal, my recent reads have had a tendency to be on the 'heavy' side and not everbodies cup of tea! So I opted for one of my 'lighter' non-fiction reads - 365 Tao Daily Meditation by Deng Ming-Dao with each piece (or word) reflecting one verse (daily meditation) from the book.

Working with my discarded prerequisite - 'chance' played its part once again with a happy find of an old Scrabble set a few days out from the call for entries. Too irresistable - exhibiting at a bookshop - title "between the lines"- finding the Scrabble tiles, words are a must for this one! And might I add, only one entry per person - geewizacumz which one to choose?

Each piece stands suspended upright onto old wooden stamp blanks. Assembled with cyclone rod, lock nuts, stainless steel spring and Scrabble tiles.

As in the title - life is a tad full on atm and you could say that I am just 'keeping afloat' with all my commitments. Time to post has been limited so I decided to post an image of one of my earlier assemblages. Exhibited in a competition this piece was Highly Commended.

You may or may not be familiar with my piece 'House of the Holy : Enlightened Ones' it was the face for my recent exhibition Deconstruction : Reconstruction and is pictured on the link for my website on the top right side here on my blog.

My inner thoughts and feelings that lie behind in the makings of this piece run pretty deep, and when I try to explain these emotions I find it very hard for me to articulate. Perhaps because I see them as a feeling rather than an explaination. Infact this applies to all my assemblages. I think that is why the titles are so important as they carry the message that has been transfered as I assemble them. It is certainly challenging to say the least, as I am always asked what lies behind the piece. It's a bit like trying to answer what lies behind the meaning of life!

And now other works have come about with the same emotion behind the construction and House of the Holy is becoming a body of work...

In the last couple of weeks I decided to induldge in a little retail therapy at my two favourite bookshops - Badger's Books and Books of Buderim.

Books of Buderim as in the name is located in Buderim top end of town across from the Tavern, it is a fantastic little bookshop that caters for all flavours and stocks some of the most beautiful books. It's not hard to spend an hour or two or to resist the urge and take one home! After all I was in there for some retail therapy, right? My intent was to go buy a book I had seen a month ago, my indulgence a totally delicious and extremely inspirational book titled WOOD by Andy Goldsworthy

Badger's Books on the otherhand is a secondhand bookstore that never fails to cater to my needs. Generally when I'm on the hunt for a book I always seem to find it there! My internal radar was going off this day - telling me "Badger's - Badger's, go into Badger's" "Okedokey then" so off I troddled down to Badger's Books. Thinking of my flavour atm - welding steel, assemblaging etc... I headed straight to the Art & Sculpture shelves. And would you believe it the first book I see and on the front cover is a picture of a welded rusted steel assemblage!

An Australian artist Ian McKay, not familiar with Ian and his sculptures I just had to buy it. Of course on the agenda - google and learn more about Ian McKay and his philosophy behind his works.

This a relevatively small piece and came through while assembling another piece, which seems to be my patterning of late. The shell of three bullets still within their casing and one missing... the clay bone slot in perfectly, and as I inserted it the title came to me.

"Journey, Places, Marks & Traces" exhibition opening night for fellow artists Fiona Dempster and Barry Smith.

I am a true admirer of both Barry and Fiona's artworks and when they come together as one exhibit it is a treat to not only the eyes but to the senses as well. It was a really hard decision to choose which piece to add to my growing art collection! Among the many... one particular piece of artwork 'was calling on me' by it's quiet presence, beauty and rusty exterior. Then seeing it's title and the first words that appear on the first page "finding my place" Oh, How so appropriate for me right now, a must have!!!

It's a little hard for me to explain this piece, as it's more of a feeling rather than an explaination...

When I make an assemblage I tend to 'live' with it for a day or so, allowing thoughts to come and go, with not being to attached to the dialogue. At first I had thought 'wheel of life' for the title but it came from my left side brain, it sounded ok but still seemed to feel incomplete.

Not being particularly bothered by it, I continued on my merry way assembling... and once the piece came together with the bones in place, looking over at it while making lunch - Radiant Love came to me. It seemed so fitting as the piece has an air of radiance about it.

Almost finished just a few minor touches... I love the fact that the wheel can be turned with the handle, I wish we had sound on blogs because it makes the best sound whilst turning...

In the making...

This piece has progressively been coming along over the last couple of weeks and yesterday was making day - Far out, I hope the neighbours are still all good... 'cus it was getting preety roudy with all the banging and machinery humming away!

The bones in the image below are made in stoneware clay fired to 1300* in a reduced atmosphere. These bones are going to be set into and around the outside of a steel wheel to protrude outward. The wheel is still on it's shaft and will retain movement, I have set aside an old wooden handle and bolt to weld to the wheel facing outward (verticle) for the action of spinning around.

The steel wheel welded into place, the backing disk seen is a plow disk and set with a spacer in between the two. You can see closely on the wheel the holes drilled for the bones to be set into.

Being a wall piece I had to consider methods for hanging as well as for strength, being steel it has some weight to it. A lucky find amongst my bits was a round rim perfect size and depth. Clamped down ready for welding, two holes were drilled first for the hanging.

The final touches were done today with the handle welded on and the bones set in place, all is looking good....

Another piece that was birthed upon distraction! 'Spirit Dance' is it's name, and came creating a whirlwind and translike state within me, as my hands assembled with a sense of total fun, frivolous in nature and with multiple swift movements. Perhaps it's the nature I am adopting with my new found cyber behaviour, of back and forth, one site to another. Who really knows, but do I really care? No! I love it....my mind was off in the ether!

It's amazing what some new finds can do, to stir the pot of inspiration! These three are from my latest finds from the recycling yard I stumbled upon last week. The second set of stump caps (ant caps) I have come across that were only a set of three, twice in a space of a couple of months.

Already transformed into assembled mini landscape scenes (within the diameter of the cap), almost finished apart from a few additions. This morning it only dawned on me that they are representational of parts of my life. This first image represents my current life; living in the country with starry nights above (although I the stars are yet to be added). City Lights are my foundations; my childhood days of living and growing up in the city still very relevant in my world as I live it and the third Sailing the Seas; sailing this grand sea of life.

ABC Recycling World

The other day I stumbled upon this recycling yard, in the most unlikely place but extremely accessable when on my deliveries. It's suituated on the Bribie Road on the left hand side right next to the service station. And ofcourse I just had to do a U-turn when I realised what I had just past....

These are my finds - small sheets of lead so soft I can bend with my fingers (with gloves of course!), three groovy stump caps, rusty saw blades, bit of weathered mesh strips, bits & bobs...

Kiln opening

This weekend I had two kilns going on the same day, my large gas and tiny electric. Firing in the large kiln my unearthed ceramics and the electric kiln a small commission and Lotus wares.

I was on excitement overload upon opening both kilns to see that it was a 100% strike rate. A kiln opening for me, can present itself like a smorgasbord full of emotion, waiting in anticipation to see if all is ok.

Top shelf - Four large Pitchers - wheel coil thrown, wheel thrown parts & spouts, assembled and handcarved. Each Pitcher can take up to 4-5 hours just to handcarve depending on design.

Bottom shelf - an assortment wheel thrown and turned, handcarved bowls.
Each bowl pictured can take up to three hours just to handcarve depending on the design.

Exhibition gets a mention...

The plate above right is known as the 'Fish Bowl' - New Kingdom, Dynasty 18, about 1450 B.C (ofcourse this one is a reproduction for the dig!), the original piece is housed in the Egyptian Museum, Berlin.

ALaW 2010 - Alphabet two

I had two spare tiles left over, spares for 'just incase'. When working with clay it pays to make more than is needed, incase you make a mistake, drop or break one unintentionally. I must say it is not an easy task to reproduce another identical tile, the same thickness several months later.

A bit of fun, not sure if I'll use them or not.... could be useful for the final layout.

One more photo to share with you. I particularly like the result of staining the clay made on the plyboard I had them stored on, six months of aging...

It was like fast and furious to get all these letters finished today and posted! Seeing the third alphabet for ALaW 2011 starts this Monday. So, simple and sweet to wrap things up.

I chose to use my most favourite piece in this alphabet to finish the last two letters using that technique with clay inlay. It happens to be 'P' -dots created by the pointy end of a stick, well, a pencil really.

X - Inlay with red porcelain slip

Transfered the letter lightly onto the clay tile using the transfer paper, then X marks the spot, dots with the pencil. Filled with red porcelain slip, left to dry a little....

...and once touch dry - fast tracking here (it is usually left to dry then sanded) I've used a turning tool to scrap back the slip to reveal the red porcelain slip clay inlay. I will sand when dry to sharpen up the final result.

All my letters to date have been previously marked onto the clay via transfering paper, this time I've loosened up and drawn the letter Y and border freehand with a pencil deeply imprinting the clay tile. The dots are undertaken the same method as with X; clay slip inlay.

All cleaned up looking like a pink polka dot dress! Although once fired the slip will turn red.

Last but not least Z.... I decided to end my alphabet using the same technique that I started the alphabet with, (with the letter 'A') by method of Carving.

YAY! All done, now all I have to do is -bisque fire them - glaze them - and fire them to 1300*

My last letters for ALaW 2010, somewhat overdue! 5 weeks to be exact, but who's counting...

U - Woodcut Print with underglaze

I've been at this one to conquer for sometime now, with each attempt amounting to dissapointment. And you could say that it was U that held up progress (plus xmas, new year etc...) to completing my ALaW in time. Not wanting it to get the better of me, I left it until I had optimine time to devote 100% head space to retry.

My adjustments I needed to re-address were (and many);

The initial carving needed to be deeper, so off to buy real (sharp) woodcut tools!
Always remember to carve your letter backwards, just as well the first attempt was a fizzer (and on a test tile).
Re-adjust the thinking to clay and not paper as in the workshop, of course Kim...this should have been your first thought, huh.
Using black underglaze (not ink) resulted in different tackiness, well no tackiness at all actually. Hence the printing ink roller was not suitable, out with the sponge roller, a test run, and wolla, yay, as easy as that!

The techniques for the next two letters are taken from this idea of the woodcut print process, minus or adding some steps to suit the clay.

V - Negative Print with red porcelain slip

Instead of carving into wood I've carved deeply and directly into the clay with a carving tool. Then with a sponge roller loaded with red porcleain slip, I've rolled over the clay tile to print a negative letter V. Being careful not to get any slip into the carved letter, as in the ink printing method.

W - Negative carving with black underglaze

Reverse to V - Instead of carving the letter first I carved it last. Using the sponge roller again, this time loaded with black underglaze I've rolled over the whole tile completely covering it with black. When touch dry I've transfered the letter W into the clay tile (gently) to make an imprint, then carved the letter and border.

365 - Continuation

A few months ago I purchased a book - 365 Tao by Deng Ming-Dao, a contemporary book of daily meditations on the Taoist way. Since that day I have been reading my daily meditation as a positive and inspirating way to start my day.

Opalescent Hue

Yesterday I just happened to come out side a just the right time...nature turned on a very brief and magnificent hue in the sky. I had just enough time to run and grab my camera before it vanished.

It was much higher than the heavier cloud, it looked to be a thin sheet of cloud spanning a few kilometres (easy!) closely hugging and around the sun, it transmitted this amazing aura of colours. It felt like a 'divining' moment in time! Oh soooooo lucky to have been able to see it, and take a pic and share it with you.

100 Post - give away

In the world of blog there's a pattern, a tradition if you like, of a 'give away' generally an artwork when reached a milestone of 100 posts. Well this is my number 100! Not for me to break tradition, rules perhaps, tradition definitely not! And the chance to be able to give someone something, for me, is an added bonus.

I live by three moto's;

1. 'Our judgments prevent us from seeing the good that lies beyond appearances' - Wayne W. Dyer

2. 'The greater danger for most of us lies not in the setting our aim to high & falling short; but in setting our aim to low, & achieving our mark' - Michelangelo And,

3. 'The very act of kindness can unprision you' - unknown (I'm not sure if I made this one up or I read it somewhere)

Living very passionately by the last moto and on reflection of all three, I decided to give a choice from three very different mediums...

what's on the go in the studio

This wet weather has created a stallmate for me in the studio, its most uninspiring to work in the shed when its cool, wet and windy! However it does give me a dam fine excuse to be inside out of the rain and catch up on the other things. I might just get the Christmas decorations out!

ALaW - T

The A Letter a Week (ALaW) challenge continues and is fast coming to an end of the second alphabet. Being totally focused on preparations for my next exhibition and extremely wet weather, I am now seriously lagging behind, we're already into December and I haven't finished the November letters! eeek, starting to feel a little under pressure!

T - Carving

Seeing all the common techniques I am familiar with have been used, I'm starting to use the same techniques in previous letters in a different manner, thinking outside the norm if practically possible.

Here I'm carving the clay out around the letter to create a three dimensional 'T', much more challenging than the A and N, where A I carved directly around the outline and N carved within the outline resulting a negative letter.

Sanded and ready for bisque.

Clamping, welding, banging and hammering, on overtime late into the evening, creativity on overload. But I've just gotta go with it while its flowing.

Another assembled piece I have just finished, and ready for my exhibition 'Deconstruction : Reconstruction'

Above a detailed photograph; ceramic tower fired to 1200* and (carved out) negative space, a golden look I was seeking light shinning through celophane paper. I seem to have a fetish for celophane paper...and have used it within some of my assemblages.

Clamped to help, this piece took abit of brain power to nut out the best way of welding it together. Below; finished piece, this side has a door knob the other has a padlock and two keys tied either end of a length of aged string (as I found it).
